Design for generations on the move

In a world of constrained resources and space FÓLK in collaboration with Jón Helgi Hólmgeirsson decided to create a minimalistic yet highly functional product that can be used in a variety of ways, focusing on generations that are on the move.

Meet the designer

Our Approach to Sustainability

Form follows function

The Urban Nomad is designed to fit a flexible home. It is multi-functional and designed for hanging with specially designed poles and hooks for added functionality.

Minimal but strong

The shelf can be used in any room of the home; the kitchen, the hallway, the the children’s room or the living room. The shelf can carry up to 40 kg even though no glue or screws hold the product together.

Console Table

Built on the same methodology as the wall shelves, The Urban Nomad Console Table comes in two sizes and colour variations.

Hopefully it will be handed down from generation to generation as the materials are long lasting. At the end of the product life cycle, the steel can be recycled and the wood can be reused.

Designed with a circular mindset

Both the shelves and the console are designed to last. Easy to assemble and disassemble.

Our hope is that the Urban Nomad will be handed down from generation to generation, as the materials are long lasting. At the end of the product life cycle, the steel can be recycled and the wood can be reused.

How FÓLK approaches lowering the environmental footprint

At FÓLK we strive to limit and reduce the environmental footprint of our products and we also want to encourage sustainable living through the use of our products.

One of the methods we use is measuring the CO2 footprint of our products. According to the EU, 80% of a product‘s environmental impacts are decided in the design phase.

FÓLK’s principles help decrease the environmental footprint. Typically, the largest contributors of impacts are:

  • The amount and type of material used
  • The level of waste of material created in the production phase
  • The type of energy used in the production phase
  • The durability of the product and a product‘s lifetime.
  • The end of life and the opportunity to reuse or recycle the product‘s materials.

CO2 measurements of The Urban Nomad collection

FÓLK used Målbar screening tool version 2.9608 single indicator for Carbon Footprint analysis in the design and production development. Example of results are as follows for the last batch produced:

Urban Nomad Shelf Medium White-Gold: 16kg

Urban Nomad Console Table Medium Black-Black: 43kg
